This kid in my class told me that going to Europe wasn’t really anything. He cautioned me that all Europe was was America in reverse. I still don’t really know what that means. I guess its something like what Margaret Thatcher said…that Europe could never be like America because ‘Europe is built on history, and America on Philosophy’. Over dinner that night that line kept going over in my head. America in reverse? If America is the car and all of its citizens are passengers I guess its true. Kind of backward and hated…driving the wrong way down a one-way street. But then I think about how I just want to drive south to get into the warmth again that I miss here in fall. Somewhere around Central America where I can be free of this weight that always seems to hang. But then I realize that my Spanish is not so good. I have no desire to learn or get any better. All I want is to read and talk and fuck and drink and walk through the rain without worrying about getting wet. Life is kind of like Chinese food. If it’s so good why is it cooked by Mexicans? Everything is Mexican food.
Over the past month I have been thinking a lot about this country. A lot of people buying things they don’t need with money they don’t have. I guess that shows how truly unhappy we all are. When I sit and think, no matter how great of a day I have had, I always have this depressed feeling in the back of my head. A retarded sense of lose. Like my best friend died six years ago and I still think about it. But that friend is some kind of dream. I guess when something’s die there is no way to make them live again. Like some kind of innocence that I don’t believe I ever had, or a dream that I am not truly convinced was ever there. Its not like you get up one day and your dream just dies right there in front of you. Everything seems to change slowly and time slows down and speeds up so often. Dreams change, people change, friends move on, people die, and we try to bury everything and say that we are ok.
“How was your day today?”
“Shit. How was yours?”
“Shit”
I mean come on! That’s how we all really feel. Everybody is self-medicating somehow. Art, alcohol, drugs, school, work, sex, or television. It’s all just another step in a big spiral downward. How many people do you know that are truly happy? None. Everybody has problems…we get it. Just shut the fuck up and live your life cuz you know what? When you die your gonna find out that there is no big grand scheme behind it all. You can try to find meaning in belief of philosophy or science but some questions…the truly BIG questions will never be answered. Like why does the trash guy come right when I am trying to get out of the driveway? Some things we will just never know. But that’s not even true…so it doesn’t hurt at all.

A Royal Recovery

I have been hashing through some of my millions of word documents and stumbled across this gem written by Jon Davidson a few years back for The Royal Magazine.
The true story goes as follows-I got tickets to the Hope of the States concert and could not go. Jon went and wrote this (which I believe was his take on the preamble of the constitution)++
----------------------------------------
HOPE OF THE STATES
"The Blazer look is Getting Old"
When the clock struck midnight, somebody somewhere died, and something critical was created on East Congress Street. I refer to the almost empty scene in the Detroit’s Shelter, which bred a haunting moment of clarity as Hope of the States, baring seven members from across the northern border, orchestrated a raw performance on October 2, 2004. Joining them were I, the Magician from Pontiac, Full White Drag down from Windsor, and Lonuk out of New York.
I, the Magician and Full White Drag both teased the crowd with Post-Punk Frequency along with an accuracy of a well-oiled machine, pumping out solid distortion backed with equally-as-effective vocalizations. Yet they had just set the standard as Lonuk threw convention aside with a blending of psychedelic lullabies revealing a West Coast influence. Several members from the other bands joined the crowd as they let Lonuk’s unique sound flow vicariously through their veins.
Though the bands were forced to play short sets, around forty-five minutes apiece, the hunger of the crowd was showcased as they surrounded the stage with the appearance of the members of Hope of the States. The musicians shuffled on stage, scratching at their suits or leather jackets, eager to begin their reign. Hope melded artistic mediums by combining each one of their sounds with short films displayed on a backdrop just behind the band. The films embodied haunting messages of anti-war origin, concocting animation with military stock footage. Chilling it was to view war machine blue prints juxtaposed with a free-flying bird as the lead singer howled from the darkness.
Yet as sobering as the performance was, the band lent welcoming banter to the crowd, the lead singer offering his half-smoked cigarettes to the audience. Nonetheless these breaks in energy seamlessly were brought back to the show when Hope of the States returned to their mind-numbing performance, falling into each other while bleeding their harmonic depth into all those present.
Though all bands presented an original sound to the Shelter, Hope of the States seemingly burnt the venue from the ground and rebuilt it with their bones, still sticky with sweat. Their new CD, which came out on October 5, should be in your stereo, as their beautiful sound shall not leave your skin.

*Don't be too hard on us for publishing this. Jon is a 20 year old recovering alcoholic trapped inside a 40 year old coke head's body. We didn't commission this piece, it literally showed up on our door step one morning, covered in cigarette burns and what appeared to be kitty litter. That said, I think it's beautiful. Jon might still believe it's 1979 but he's every bit as much of a poet as Zach Braff is a movie director.
Somebody call my rabbi, I think we've found our Hunter S. Thompson.
I especially like Brandons pot-shot at Zach Braff at the end of this.

Blu-Ray PlayStations won't play Blu-Ray discs
Sony's new Blu-Ray equipped PlayStations won't be able to play Blu-Ray DVD movies, because they couldn't meet all the requirements set out by the cartel that controls Blu-Ray DRM.
Vincent Bautista, Sony's product manager for data storage, told CNET.com.au that due to copy protection issues and lagging software development, the drive will only play user-recorded high-definition content from a digital camcorder, and not commercial movies released under the BD format.
Bautista says that one of two reasons for this is the fact that commercial content is encrypted with High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP), which can only be decrypted using a HDCP-compliant graphics card that offers DVI or HDMI connections. Since there are currently no PCs for sale offering graphics chips that support HDCP, this isn't yet possible.

Unfortunatly I am not going to be able to make it to Wizard World this year.
I could not get the days off of work. This is VERY shitty. I am without words to describe my grief.
Hopefully this will console you. It has done wonders for me.
But upon your return I have lost a bet and I owe Jon a box of cigars. Ask him if you are invited to celebrate the death of a relationship.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers ripped off the Tom Petty song "Last Dance with Mary Jane" with their new song "Dani California". If you listen to the songs back to back its pretty funny. But Tom Petty is a badass about it in this quote-
"I seriously doubt that there is any negative intent there. And a lot of rock 'n' roll songs sound alike. Ask Chuck Berry. The Strokes took 'American Girl' [for their song 'Last Nite'], and I saw an interview with them where they actually admitted it. That made me laugh out loud. I was like, 'OK, good for you' ... If someone took my song note for note and stole it maliciously, then maybe [I'd sue]. But I don't believe in lawsuits much. I think there are enough frivolous law suits in this country without people fighting over pop songs."

"Mike Skinner--aka the Streets--is going to run the New York Marathon this year, he has announced. The British rapper, who is understood to have quit booze and drugs, made the brave pronouncement in a recent posting in his official blog-
Wrote Skinner: 'Spoke to Reebok about things and I've decided to run the New York Marathon. I know it seems a bit long but if people do it dressed as milk cartons it can't be that hard, right?' "
